The Famine Ship - the "Jeanie Johnston"
The Famine Ship - “Jeanie Johnston”
Between the years of 1845 and 1849 Ireland suffered a potato famine. Although there was more than enough food to feed the nation, the English landlords put profit before humanity and exported it as per their normal business practices.
The Irish famine is a historical event which has deeply scarred this nation. It lost more than a million in starvation and more than a million in immigration. It has yet to return to its pre-famine population. The suffering during this time has not been forgotten. Nor should it be.
The Jeanie Johnston was a cargo ship that took immigrates to North America returning with its cargo. Most famine ships were knicknamed “Coffin Ships” since so many people died during the voyages. However, the Jeanie Johnston is remarkable in that it did not lose even one soul upon any of its journeys.
This attraction was very interesting and even had researched and traced the fate of some of its actual passengers, many of whom did achieve their dream of prosperity in North America.
