Giant's Causeway
Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland
Just look at this landscape - near perfect hexagon columns stacked together like a jigsaw puzzle. As one of my cousins noted when I posted a picture of it on FaceBook, “That is one wicked looking place.”
Some say they were formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. Others know better.
Ancient legend has it that the causeway – a raised road or path usually over a broad expanse of water – was actually formed by an Irish giant - “Finn McCool - aka Fionn Mac Cumhaill”. He was at war with a Scottish giant “Benandonner” who was threatening Ireland.
In order to confront Beanandonner, Finn begins to build the causeway across the sea. However, this is not the best of ideas since, when they do get close to each other, Finn learns that Benandonner is terrifyingly huge – absolutely massive, in fact.
Finn beats a hasty retreat, followed by the Scottish giant.
As is so often the case, Finn was saved by the quick-thinking of his wife. She hastily disguised him as a baby.
When Beanandonner saw the baby he was horrified. If the child was that big, how huge must be its daddy? The Scottish giant retreated, leaving Ireland in peace.
This version is much more plausible.
Warning: Prepare yourself for a LOT of pictures!
