St. Audoen's Church
St. Audoen's is the only remaining medieval parish church in Dublin. It is dedicated to St. Ouen, the 7th century bishop of Rouen and patron saint of Normandy.
In the main porch is an early Celtic gravestone known as the “Lucky Stone” which has been kept there since before 1309. It was said to have strange properties, and merchants and traders used to rub it for luck.
Did I rub it?
Answer: Yes. Of course.
Was there ever any doubt?
(And yes, this was allowed. I broke no rules, in case that worried anybody.)
Among other treasures, it houses a 15th century effigial tomb to Baron Portlester and his wife, and below its foundations is remenants of original Dublin medieval lanes.
So glad we "just happened upon it" on our walk from Guinness to Christ's Church Cathedral. No charge, but I did make a donation.
