Carlingford
Carlingford, County Louth, Republic of Ireland
It was time for lunch! ... Or was it?
Well... for Sharon and I, it was not.
We had had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel so decided to forgo lunch in order to poke around this very picturesque village on the shores of Carlingford Lough.

King John's Castle
Carlingford Castle, aka “King John's Castle”, stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the harbour with views to the Mourne Mountains.
It was built in the late 12th century by the Norman knight, Hugh de Lacy.
It was the first fortified stone structure in Carlingford and legend has it that King John stayed here for 3 days in 1210 AD.
Wow.
It is in ruins but was oh-so fascinating to this prairie, North American, Canadian girl.

“The Tholsel” or "town-gate" is one of the few left in Ireland.
Its original function was to levy taxes on goods entering the town, hence the murder-holes above the entrance (an opening in a gateway or passageway where defenders could fire, throw or pour harmful substances or objects, such as rocks, arrows, scalding water, hot sand, quicklime, tar, or boiling oil, down on attackers) to assist in protecting the collected monies. The small chamber in the ground floor of the Tholsel house was used as the town goal in the 18th century. |
The Market Square is now the town's main street. This is an area where a weekly market was held with records of its layout going back to 1358.
