Jaunting Car Ride
Jaunting car ride
A jaunting car is a light two-wheeled carriage for a single horse. It was the typical conveyance for persons in Ireland at one time.
It's name is generally thought to be taken from the verb “to jaunt”, now often used to mean to “go on a short pleasure excursion”, but in its earliest uses its meaning was to make a horse prance, hence to jolt or bump up and down.
Our ride was pretty smooth, all things considering.
Travel comment: You know, I think this is one activity that we could have missed. We've all had the chance of buggy rides before and there wasn't anything special about this. Yes, yes, I know – buggy rides are associated with Ireland – but honestly – no real point. Might have been different if it were through some incredible Irish landscape, with a picnic or something like that.... or at the end of a walking trail to take us home... but as is – yah, no. Very lukewarm, if not downright cool on this offering. (And that was the consensus of our buggy companions too, not just my opinion.) Oh well – not everything will be great on a tour.
